Choosing the right Size and Length Stair Stringer

Almost every deck project need a stairs. And let's admit it, they can be a little intimidating when it comes time to cut the stair stringers. Why not just buy them directly from the manufacturer? You'll save time and money. Think about it; you'll need the 2 X 12 from your local lumberyard anyway.... Another suggestion we have is that you buy one stair stinger from us and then use that as a pattern.

Using the stair stringer calculator chart, you can easily figure out what you need for your deck stairs. The height off the ground will determine how many steps you need and the width of the stairs will determine how many stringer you will need. Choosing between 7 X 11 or 6-3/4 X 10 is simply a preference. Think about it this way; Do I want 10 inches to step on to or do I want 11 inches of step?

5 Step Stair Stringer

5 Step Wood Stair Stringer For staircase railings, install the handrail sections between the posts, just like you would on a deck.  Let your posts stick up beyond the handrail UNLESS you don't want that interference.  If you don't want that, you cut your posts off and run your handrail right on top of the posts, so you have a continuous handrail.

6 Step Stair Stringer

6 Step Wood Stair Stringer When installing a stair case railing, our best advice is to use a lattice trim to fasten the spindles to the top rail so you don't have screw holes on the top of the handle.  When you are going up the stair and run your hand along the rail, you don't want any splinters caused by screw holes that might fray the wood.

What is code for stair stringers?

You asked for it. We delivered! Our new 2 X 12 stair stringer meet building codes for most areas.

That is a valid question. We all know the importance of meeting local building codes. You asked for it. We delivered! Our new 2 X 12 stair stringer meet code for most areas. Even though it may not always seem nessesary, they are sometimes still required. In every deck I have ever built, a 2 X 10 stringer was always adequate up to 6 steps, however, in some areas, you may not have an option depending on what is code for stair stringers. If you aren’t sure on your local building codes, we recommend using 2 X 12 stair stringers. Wouldn't it be better to spend a few bucks more than tearing your steps apart because they don't pass the final inspection?
