Selecting the best Handrails.
Choose our hand rails because they are made from vertical grain lumber so you will get very minimal bows, splits, twists, warps etc. There are very few knots in our hand rails.
What size Handrail do I need?
The size of the groove in the handrail is 3/8 inch deep and 1 1/2 inch wide, so it's a perfect size for a 3/8 inch lattice strip. To keep the handrail section from sagging after a few years, place a wooden supports) at the bottom. At least one per 8 feet section (2 for 16 section) on the bottom of the bottom handrail between the handrail and the deck.
Customers ask "How Soon can I stain my handrail or preserve on it?"
To help maintain the natural color, put preserve on it as soon possible. You may have heard that you have to wait to preserve it. But since our handrails are already kiln dried, you can apply the stain or preserve right away. Our handrails are already dry so you can stain in right away.

How do you fasten a Hand Rail to a post?
Our free advice is one of the 3 ways.
- Choice 1) Buy a small metal bracket a Home Depot and our recommended choice is…
- 2) to use and end board because the bottom handrail is not the same as the top handrail.
- Choice 3) is to toe screw the handrail into the post after you have pre dilled the holes

Our Rackable Rail Sections- sometimes referred to as a Balustrade-are available in 6 foot lengths. They can be used on the straight or on a handrail section. You can get our balustrades with straight balusters (or picket) OR you can customize your balustrade rail section by selecting turned spindles.
How do you fasten spindles to handrail? Fastening spindles to a handrail explained.
Our top rail handrail can easily be used as a bottom rail. When you use a top rail as a bottom rail, all you have to do is turn it up right so the water doesn't lay in the groove. When fastening the spindles to the hand rail, S&L recommends using a lattice strip for the top rail. Fasten your lattice strip to the spindle and then fasten the lattice strip to the groove in the handrail. This way you won't have screws showing on the top of the handrail- as the lattice strip will be fastened to the handrail from the bottom up. For the bottom hand rails run screw from bottom of handrail up into your spindles.
